Enhance the quality of life in our community through assisting and educating our citizens in the conservation, preservation, and the wise use of soil, water, and other natural resources.

SWCDs are a political subdivision of state government. The Henry County SWCD has five supervisors and two associate supervisors. Programs and activities of the SWCD are overseen by the supervisors. Two supervisors are appointed by the State Soil Conservation Board based on recommendations made by the SWCD and three supervisors are elected at the Annual Meeting.

The purpose of the Henry County Soil & Water Conservation District is to provide information about soil, water, and related natural resource conservation; identify and prioritize local soil and water resource concerns; and connect land users to sources of educational, technical and financial assistance to implement conservation practices and technologies.

The Henry County SWCD board of supervisors meet the forth Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the SWCD office. Board meetings are open to the public.

Natural Areas of Henry County: A Guide

The Henry County Soil & Water Conservation District applied for and was awarded grant money from the Henry County Community Foundation to compile a guide for residents as a reference tool for the natural areas in our county. The booklet features colorful pictures and detailed information on wetlands, prairies, streams & rivers in Henry County. It goes into detail of Henry County’s natural heritage and it highlights special natural areas such as Summit Lake State Park, Wilbur Wright Fish & Wildlife Area, Westwood Park and many others. Natural Areas of Henry County was written by Randy Jones, Jeff Ray and Tom Swinford, IDNR Regional Ecologist.

The booklet was distributed through the county at many locations. To find a copy of the Natural Areas of Henry County closest to you call the SWCD office at 529.2303 ext 3 for those locations.
